Miso Steak

This is a simple yet delicious way to serve steak – one for the carnivores. The sake, mirin and miso scream Japan.

Depending on the miso you buy, this can be a little salty – so while the marinade calls for 4 tablespoons, start off with 2 or 3 and add more if the salt is not overpowering.

The marinade:

In a saucepan, warm through the sauce ingredients and mix thoroughly.

The steak:

  • 2 x 200g Steak

Smear a little sauce on each side of the steak and leave to marinade for an hour.

Scrape off the excess sauce. Cook the steaks to medium rare. Set aside to rest for 10 mins covered in foil.

Finish the sauce:

Pour the steak juices into the pan with the retained sauce, stir through and gently reheat. Pour into small dipping bowls, one per person.

To serve:

Slice the steak and lay out on a plate. Serve with the bowl of sauce on the side, and some steamed Asian vegetables or green salad leaves.

Only five ingredients – sounds simple, huh? Well, some of these aren’t your regular store cupboard ingredients so a bit of planning ahead may be needed in your weekly shop.

That said, it’s an impressive dish to prepare – just don’t tell your guests how simple it is, ok?
